Disturb not Her Dream by SilverFlameWanderer Disturb not Her Dream by SilverFlameWanderer
"Sweet Afton" - Nickel Creek

Flow gently, sweet Afton, among thy green braes,
Flow gently, I'll sing thee a song in thy praise;
My Mary's asleep by thy murmuring stream,
Flow gently, sweet Afton, disturb not her dream.

Thou stock-dove whose echo resounds thro' the glen,
Ye wild whistling blackbirds in yon thorny den,
Thou green-crested lapwing, thy screaming forebear,
I charge you disturb not my slumbering fair.

How lofty, sweet Afton, thy neighboring hills,
Far mark'd with the courses of clear winding rills,
There daily I wander as noon rises high
My flocks and my Mary's sweet cot in my eye.

How pleasant thy banks and green valleys below,
Where wild in the woodlands the primroses blow;
There oft as mild Ev'ning weeps over the lea
The sweet scented birk shades my Mary and me.

Thy crystal stream, Afton, how lovely it glides,
And winds by the cot where my Mary resides,
How wanton thy waters her snowy feet lave,
As gathering sweet flow'rets she stems thy clear wave.

Flow gently, sweet Afton, among thy green braes,
Flow gently, sweet river, the theme of my lays,
My Mary's asleep by thy murmuring stream,
Flow gently, sweet Afton, disturb not her dream.

If I could pick any song as my lullaby, this would be it. It's beautifully melodic, peaceful, and enchanting. You can listen to the song here: [link]. And for those who don't know, Afton is a small river in Scotland.

I first heard this song two summers ago and was immediately inspired. Due to busy schedules and other art that needed to be done, it was put on hold for two years. However, this allowed me to use my pastel pencils, which I think helped create the serenity I was looking for. Working on this also brought me a lot of peace.

The trees feel uninspired, but I'm quite pleased with the river and parts of the grass. Everything looks softer in real life because my scanner picks up the bright elements of the colors more than the muted elements. I tried to edit it down a little bit, but that just made it look uninspired. The unicorn could probably use more detail, but I like the impression it leaves--something of a dream.

wow you did a really nice job with the grass, especially the far bank. Your hand must have killed!

Thank you :D My hand was OK, but my wrist was killing me. I had done part of the water first, so I had arch my wrist at a really odd angle :aww: Definitely had fun playing the pastels on this one though :) I think I just need to get used to blending them a little more. There are some areas where I'm not too happy with the way the colors have layered.

Interesting that the river is almost the same color as the sky. Kind of reinforces the dreamlike quality. I like the texture on the trees especially and the water detail.

I probably could have pushed the color of the water a little darker, but I was happy with how it was looking and didn't want to mess it up!

The more I look at this, the more it feels like a dream--a nice peaceful dream.
